Jakarta, April 14 April, 2020 – The Coca-Cola Foundation, Coca-Cola Indonesia, and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (“Coca-Cola”) announced its commitment today (14/04) to provide humanitarian assistance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The company is donating IDR 10 billion worth of aid to the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia—PMI), which is currently focusing its efforts on providing vital services to communities affected by the outbreak. Through this contribution, Coca-Cola intends to support the Indonesian Red Cross in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia

The donation has been officially made by Diego Gonzales, CEO of PT Coca-Cola Indonesia and Kadir Gunduz, Managing Director of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia & PNG, to Jusuf Kalla, Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross at separate locations. The measure was taken in support of the Indonesian government’s policy that requires citizens to practice “social distancing” at all times during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Gunduz said that the COVID-19 pandemic is a world crisis, and businesses needed to play their part in helping out. “The loss of lives and threat of public health rom the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus is heartbreaking. Business has a role to play in emergency situations, alongside government and others in the community. In this moment, I want to express our gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all medical heroes and volunteers on the frontlines who are working day and night to keep people safe, battling against COVID-19. We are humbled by their courage and resilience,” Mr. Gunduz said.

Triyono Prijosoesilo, Director of Public Affairs and Communications for PT Coca-Cola Indonesia, said, “These are challenging times for all of us, and we at Coca-Cola are fully committed to doing everything we can to help. After closely monitoring the development of the COVID-19 situation here in Indonesia, we have decided to suspend our advertising activities until further notice. Our focus at this time is to support the safety and wellbeing of our employees and the communities we serve. Our advertising funds and other resources will be rechanneled to support and contribute to humanitarian activities that can help manage the COVID-19 outbreak.”

Since March 23, 2020, commercial advertising of Coca-Cola and all of its brands in Indonesia has been put on hold. All committed media space and resources are now being redirected toward increasing understanding and awareness of COVID-19 as well as supporting relief and response efforts for the most affected communities.

“Tackling the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the main priorities of the Indonesian Red Cross. We will continue to mobilize our resources to assist communities and the government in performing prevention, detection, and response measures. In these challenging times, we greatly appreciate the assistance that Coca-Cola has entrusted to us. The funds we have received will be used to conduct educational activities, procure much-needed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and implement various services such as ambulance, first aid/family care, logistic distribution, psychosocial, and disinfection services,” added Jusuf Kalla, Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross.

Jusuf Kalla further added, “As of Friday (03/27), the Indonesian Red Cross has carried out large-scale disinfection efforts at 6,839 locations in 131 regencies/cities across 26 provinces in Indonesia. We are focusing our spraying activities to public areas such as places of worship, schools, markets, offices, and government buildings.”

To support its operations in Jakarta, the Indonesian Red Cross has also built an emergency warehouse at the Smesco Building in Jakarta. This emergency logistics warehouse will store a wide range of COVID-19 countermeasure supplies and utilities, including 120 units of repurposed water trucks, 230 units of pickup trucks as well as spraying equipment and disinfectant liquids.

The donation provided by Coca-Cola will be redirected by the Indonesian Red Cross toward emergency relief and response efforts such as coronavirus education and awareness programs as well as early detection and response training, particularly in areas which house the most vulnerable communities. The funds will also support the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers and volunteers from the Indonesian Red Cross. Furthermore, Coca-Cola has also worked together with various partners on the ground to distribute 1 million beverages for those who work on the frontlines in managing, serving, and caring for those affected by COVID-19 in Indonesia.
